I've been busy!

Life has certainly gotten in the way of my keep up with the blog. BUT that is good news, considering that I've been too busy TAKING photos to write ABOUT taking photos.

An exciting development is my foray into commercial work. I did a shoot for a law firm here in Boston a few weeks back, and more recently I did a two day shoot for Sweetwater Cafe. To be fair, I bartend at Sweetwater, so I know the chefs well and enjoyed a level of comfort in the kitchen that I won't have elsewhere. That being said, I'm very happy with the shots and had a great time constructing my first setup for a macro food shoot. And for someone who doesn't eat meat, I think I captured the juicy cheeseburger pretty well!

Anyone who knows me, even a little bit, knows how much I admire the Kennedy Family. The Kennedys inspired me to study political science and enter public service, and I am a better person for having done so. Ted has always held a special place in my heart, and I absolutely believe that he is one of the best Senators to have ever served in Washington. The praise for Kennedy and his contribution to Massachusetts, the United States, and the World has been fittingly robust, so I'll cut my fulsome words short.

A quote from the JFK Library and Museum sums it all up for me:

"The political valor of Edward Moore Kennedy exceeds what can be told in a single volume. When principle demanded that he stand alone, he stood alone. When the public interest called for compromise, he compromised. When hope and human dignity could be advanced by reaching across the aisle, he extended his hand. He carried the nation on his shoulders through the most important struggles of our time – for justice, for equality, for opportunity, for freedom."

God speed Teddy, may Jack, Bobby, and the rest of the family greet you with open arms.

One of the things that I have enjoyed so much about starting my own photography business is having the opportunity to reconnect with my Alpha Chi Omega sisters. Katie was a few years ahead of me at UMass, but she was always such a positive, friendly, and enthusiastic presence in the sorority house. It was such a pleasure to see that she is still the same beautiful woman, and I was honored to be asked to capture her wedding day.

As Katie herself put it, she and Mark have been inseparable almost since the moment they met, and their wonderful relationship was on display throughout their wedding day.

Congratulations Katie & Mark, here's to a wonderful life together.

My Lensbaby is definitely one of my favorite lenses. Its selective focus feature adds extra emphasis to a photo and gives an over-all dreamy feel to the image.

Weddings and the lensbaby just naturally go well together, and the resulting soft and blurry images just feel romantic.

Lisa and Dave's beautiful wedding was a perfect setting to put my trusty baby to the test.

I had the pleasure of being the second shooter

for Lisa & Dave's beautiful wedding.

The colorful Scottish kilts and reception at a castle made for so many opportunities for great shots, and the totally adorable ring-bearer in his mini-kilt certainly didn't hurt!

Many thanks again to Lee for asking me to help capture Lisa & Dave's special day. For all the photogs out there, Lee is the owner of Ziplens, a service that lets you rent fancy lenses for your SLR at an affordable price. Ziplens is invaluable to me since I'm still a starving artist and can't afford the multiple thousand dollar lenses that he has available.

Look for a second batch of shots that I took with my lensbaby to come soon.

My First Showing!

Well, I listened to all of your fabulous input on my photos and I submitted the set from the Notre Dame Cathedral to submit to the photo competition......you guys must all have great eyes because both of my photos are among the top 45 that will be displayed in the show!!

This is my first gallery showing and I'm beyond thrilled. Just having the opportunity to mingle and connect with other artists is so important to me as I continue to learn about the dynamic medium of photography.

Help!

I'm entering a juried photo competition, my first. Because it's my first contest, I think I'm being way too anal about the whole thing and I just CANNOT decided which two photos to enter.

I'll be entering one photo in the travel category and one in the fine art category, but the thing is that I want the photos to be a cohesive set so the judges will recognize my viewpoint.

So, this is where y'all come in. Below are the three sets that I'm considering. Would you mind letting me know in the comments which one is your fav? Also, please keep in mind that blogger murders the colors.

The more that I entrench myself in the world of photography the more I see my art and myself growing. I love learning, and right now as I'm simultaneously completing my masters degree, pursuing a love of photo-taking, and learning the trade of public radio, I couldn't be happier. Life is exciting when you open your eyes and your heart to the world.

I wanted to share a few photos from this past weekend's pre-wedding shoot up in Marblehead. The bride and groom are getting married on July 4th (my birthday!), and they decided to have some fun shots taken with their close friends and two adorable beagles.

The weather was pretty rough, with drizzle, wind, and a chill, but we made the best of it and had fun running around in a beautiful park overlooking the ocean.

I'll be shooting Jessica & Nick's rehearsal dinner this weekend, as well as some groomsmen preparation on the big wedding day.

My trip to Seattle further complicated my decision-making about where I'm going to end up in the fall for sure. Seattle is such a beautiful city, and a place I could definitely see myself living. During the next fews months I'm going to have to ask myself a lot of questions about where I want to end up and what I want to be doing.

In the meantime, I have the snap shots and the smiles of my friends to remind me of this amazing place.

Carrousel de la Eiffel

I'll remember this night as one of the highlights of my trip to Paris. The Eiffel Tower at night is simply amazing, and coming across a carousel to photograph just made the night perfect.

I used a lensbaby composer lens for these shots, the selective focus feature of the fun lens gives the sense of blur and motion that make these photos look (I hope!) dreamy and surreal.

I had the pleasure of shooting my dear friend Emily and her fiancee Sean in the Arnold Arboretum this week. The Arboretum is an almost magical place, especially on an early summer evening when the setting sun casts gorgeous shadows. Emily and Sean are a great couple and their dogs Evie and Leo made the shoot even more fun. I cannot wait for their wedding next year!

Website Updates!

A few new updates to the website for y'all. I changed the splash page photos, added some new shots to the internal galleries, added some super-fabulous background music (Sigur Ros!), and most importantly posted my prices.

I'll most likely be doing a major overhaul of the site once I get back from Paris with all of bajillions of photos I'm sure to take, but the recent changes will do for now.

In other news, this is probably the busiest week of my life as I try and churn out about 30 pages of writing by the end of the week. Add on top of that multiple shifts at the bar, paris trip planning and french language learnin', and a few weak attempts at sleep and you've got one bizzy bizzy girl.

I'm actually surprisingly calm about the whole thing, I'm trying to really just concentrate and not feel badly for myself, I did sign up for all this, after all. Plus, I really can't complain. In two weeks from tomorrow I'll be in a plane on the way to Europe.

The photo below isn't one of mine, but I just love the simplicity of it. I have it as my desktop background to remind myself to get to work so I can inch closer to my vacation....

I fed off of the sunshine today.

I slept in, listened to some great music, hung out with my two favorite J-schoolers, read in the sunshine, took one hundred photos, and just walked and walked.

I feel great, and it feels nice.

Springifying

While the black background of my blog and website set off my photos nicely, it was starting to get me down. Alors, voila! A fresh and clean new layout for both.

I think anyone in Boston will agree with me that this winter has lasted for at least 4 years, and I needed to get myself in the spring mood. You see, if we all close our eyes, cross our fingers, and say "please please please please," the clouds will break, the sun will shine, and all will be good in the world.

So join me in WILLING old man winter to pack up and bounce on out of Beantown.

I'll continue to update the website soon with a few recent photos, the page definitely needs some new life.

I also would be remiss if I didn't mention that my dear friend Jessica is in part the inspiration for the white-ifying of my blog. Her stunning photos just make me ache for spring, and be sure to check out her gorgeous new website. See? Us creative types like to stick together :)

The gigs are rolling in!

Well look at me posting more frequently. I'm proud of myself :)

I've just booked two more gigs that I'm excited to talk about.

The first is an engagement sitting with one of my dearest friends, Ms. Emily Berg, her soon-to-be hubby Sean and their adorable pups. Here's a portrait I took of Emily a year or two ago:

The second gig is shooting Boston City Councilor-at-large candidate Scotland Willis for his website. I'm actually working as a press and media consultant on the campaign, and think he's a great man to bring new ideas and a new outlook to city hall.

Aww Shucks

I have to admit, I'm just tickled pink.

I'm humbled to say that one of my little ol' photos won 3rd place in the Boston.com February photo contest.

The theme was black and white, and apparently the peoples liked my shot of the uber-cool stairway at the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art. A very cool museum, and what's up with contemporary art museums and kick-ass stairways, anyway?

In other news, I have two exciting developments to share:

1. I just booked a wedding for the upcoming season. I'll be shooting one of my sorority sisters, and I can't wait.

2. I'm going to PARIS in one month! I'm so excited I could vomit, and all day long I find myself day-dreaming about all of the amazing photographs to be had in the city.

I shall try to update the blog more often, but I can't promise anything, as there are only 3 more weeks of the semester and the amount of work I have to do is down right frightening.

The Story of the Twisted Tree

Sedona Arizona is known in part for their energy vortexes. Apparently there are certain areas where there is a high concentration of energy. Learn more about the vortexes here. On my recent trip to Sedona my mother and I traveled to two of the vortexes. The picture above was taken at the Airport Vortex, and we later hiked to the Bell Rock Vortex. They say that you know when you are near a vortex when you see the twisted juniper trees, like the one above.

After leaving the first vortex I felt a feeling of sadness and anger come over me. It was subtle at first, but got increasingly tangible as time passed. I felt depressed and upset, though I didn't know why. We went to the next vortex and hiked around for an hour and a half or so. Upon returning to the car I started to feel ill. Waves of nausea came over me and I also felt anxious and weak. I felt ill until we visited an herbalist who gave me various tonics to calm down. He said that I seem to be very sensitive to the energy and my body was overwhelmed.

The whole experience was quite odd, and while I went into the vortex experience a bit skeptical, I came out a believer.

I'm in Arizona! It is so beautiful here and the weather has been just perfect. I am sitting out on my Aunts' veranda by the pool as the sun rises overhead. In a few hours we will depart for the Grand Canyon, a sight I have never seen, so of course there will be lots of photography to be had.

I finally got my luggage this morning, a little short of 48 hours after landing in Phoenix. It has been a headache, to say the least, but I'm glad to finally have my things. Beware when flying Delta - I've had trouble with my baggage almost every time I fly.

Hope all is well in rainy chilly Boston (sorry, I had to rub it in a bit), and anywhere you may be reading from.
